Literature Text

There once was a man from Taipei

Whose tower did nothing but sway

"On balance" he thought

"A sphere really ought

To outweigh all the stray sway away"
The man would be C. Y. Lee.

The tower would be Taipei 101 and the sphere would be a 660 ton steel pendulum designed by Thornton-Tomasetti engineers and Evergreen Consulting Engineers at a cost of ....wait for it.....US$4 million dollars and given the grand name of a "tuned mass damper" - basically a HUGE pendulum that acts as a counterweight to "keep the stray sway away"

Very interesting. Good for a snicker and some more "useless information" to file away. Thanks!
